Introduction

What is a Youth Zone?

Youth Zones can be found across the UK and are affordable, high quality spaces for children and young people (CYP) aged under 18, or under 25 for those with a special education need or disability (SEND).

Youth Zones give children and young people somewhere to go, inspiring things to do and supportive people to talk to. They can get involved in a wide range of activities, develop new skills and can socialise with people from across Bristol in a safe and accessible environment.

Features of a Youth Zone:

  • Up to 250 young people can attend each Youth Zone every evening
  • They have dedicated youth workers
  • They are neutral, empowering, safe places for young people to socialise with peers and adult role models
  • Buildings and activities are open to all young people
  • Iconic, inspiring buildings show the community the value of young people
  • Just 50p per visit, £1 for a nutritious hot meal, £5 annual membership
  • Inspiring group and individual activities
  • Career and mentoring schemes
  • Dedicated youth workers help young people to look after their mental health and develop the skills they need for the future
Proposed Youth Zone site

Bristol City Council has identified a proposed location for the Youth Zone in South Bristol. The proposed site is the land to the south of Inns Court Residential Area, bordered by Hengrove Way and Hartcliffe Way (adjacent to Hengrove roundabout), as shown in the maps below. The Youth Zone would not occupy the full site, and the exact location proposed for the Youth Zone within this site will be recommended on completion of the site investigations.

This location is close to some of our most deprived communities and the Youth Zone here would contribute to economic regeneration in the area. Our vision is that the excellent facilities at the Youth Zone will appeal to children and young people from across South Bristol and other parts of the city.

In the following questions, we will outline the five goals of The Youth Zone and will ask you if you think there is a need for those things in your area and if you think the Youth Zone will achieve them. You can also give us any other comments or suggestions about the proposals.

If you are under 18 (or under 25 if you have a special educational needs and disability), you can sign up to join the Young People’s Development Group. This group will make several key decisions for the Youth Zone, from branding the Youth Zone to interviewing potential staff members. The sign-up form is at the end of the survey.
