We asked

Public consultation on the proposed transport improvements and river restoration works was undertaken between the 21 January 2021 and the 4 March 2021, a period of six weeks.

This sought to build on the feedback generated through an early consultation in February 2020 to improve travel through and within the area. The consultation asked for public feedback on the preliminary designs for transport improvements and river restoration works in Bedminster Green.

Bristol is undergoing its greatest transformation in generations. Bedminster Green is an opportunity to create a thriving new urban community, with new homes, better transport connections and enhanced public spaces. It’s part of plans to future-proof the city for a growing population and climate change. It covers five areas of land to be developed (development plots) along both sides of Dalby Avenue and Malago Road in Bedminster.  For more information visit our web page about the Bedminster Green regeneration.

Following an initial public engagement in February 2020 to get feedback on possible changes to the river and travel within the Bedminster Green area, we are now asking for people’s views on the updated design proposals.

Travel and Transport

Transport improvements provide a significant opportunity to support active and sustainable travel by making it easier for people to walk, cycle or take public transport within and through the area. This in turn will help meet the council’s climate aspirations by improving air quality in the area.

The transport improvements offer the opportunity to significantly improve the public realm and feel of the Malago Road and Dalby Avenue. Where possible, grass verges, planting and new trees will be introduced which will make journeys in and through the area more pleasant.

As part of these works the council would also seek to expand the District Heat Network. The District Heat Network plays a vital role in the City’s efforts to de-carbonise and address the Climate Emergency.

River Restoration

The restoration of the River Malago is an opportunity to work with the community, developers and the Environment Agency to create a more natural and better river environment, benefiting local residents and businesses, and those that visit the Bedminster area.

The River Malago flows through three of the five development plots, including Plot 5 where it flows under Hereford Street and the existing green public space by Whitehouse Lane, before emerging above ground alongside Clarke Street.  The proposals aim to provide better green space for people and wildlife by bringing the river back above ground within the Green, and providing an amphitheatre seating area. Ground levels will be reduced to provide a natural flood storage area during times of high river flows, reducing the flood risk to properties within the area.

Development Plots

We are not asking for feedback on the individual development proposals on the five Bedminster Green development plots, as these are being brought forward and consulted on by the developers and through the planning process. If you would like a paper copy or alternative format, or to book a virtual chat or phone call about our proposals, please call 0117 903 6449, or email and we'll be in touch.

All responses to the consultation will be analysed, and will help to inform final designs that will be submitted for planning approval later in the year.
